~EDITING TECHNIQUES THAT TRANSFORMS A FILMS NARRATIVE~
ESSENTIAL EDITING TECHNIQUES
Editing is an art form that plays a crucial role in shaping your narrative. your choice of editing techniques can impact how your audience will experience the film. Whether its continuity editing, parallel editing or cutaways to jump cuts, each method of editing will serve a specific function to create your story exactly the way you want it to be.Today on Eiman's Blog we will be diving into the essentials of editing techniques and how they play their part in visual storytelling.
CONTINUITY EDITING:
It helps you create a seamless narrative flow. Continuity editing ensures that your narrative will progress logically while maintaining a smooth and coherent flow of events. This technique is designed to make time and space appear natural and continuous and to avoid jarring transitions that could confuse your audience.
The main idea of continuity editing is to make cuts invisible,so your audience can focus on your story rather than getting distracted by mechanics of editing.Elements like 180 degree rule,90 degree rule and the 30 degree rule help you maintain spatial perception.
The basic gist of continuity editing is maintain a clear sense of time and place without noticeable interruptions
NON-CONTINUITY SYSTEM:
non-continuity is exactly opposite of continuity editing, it breaks the norms with the intention to create more abstract and experimental forms of storytelling.the conventional rules of spatial orientation, time, and motion might be ignored in non-conventional editing style.techniques like jump cuts, intercutting and disjointed sequence is used in non-continuity system to challenge the audience's perception.
Directors like Jean-Luc Godard's work is a great example of non-continuity, he often has jarring cuts and shifts in time and space in his films to make his audience more aware of filmmaking process.
PARALLEL EDITING:
Helps in building suspense and connection by showing parallel actions that converge later in the story.Parallel editing is when two or more scenes are intercut to show events happening synchronously in different locations.
this technique is commonly used to heighten the emotional impact and complexity of a scene.
Action films are a perfect example for this form of editing mostly in one scene there is a ticking bomb shown and next is cut to protagonist racing against time in another. This creates anticipation and tension, the audience is on the edge of their seats to know the outcome of both storylines.
INTERCUTTING:
Intercutting is mostly used for building tension or to show several storylines unfolding in parallel.in this technique there is cutting between two or more scenes which are happening concurrently. This helps keep audience engaged by showing hoe different parts of narrative are connected.
A good example for this technique a good example is action movie, for instance a hero id fighting a villain while cutting to a countdown timer ticking down.Intercutting technique creates a striking contrast and highlighting the duality of a character or situation.
Jump cuts:
Jump cut breaks continuity and disrupts the smooth flow of time, creating a jarring or vigorous effect.Basically in this technique you transition between 2 shots that are identical but are drastically different in time or space.jump cuts help emphasize in change of emotions or to speed up time or to create a sense of displacement.
Cutaways:
with the use of this technique you can take your audience to a different scene or angle before returning them to the original scene they were watching.jump cuts help show reactions, provide additional context or introduce important details.
Cut-in shots:
cut in shots help viewers focus from broader context to more concentrated element of the story by closing up on a specific or detail within a scene.this technique helps provide important information or to heighten emotional impact of a scene.
it makes your audience be more curious and on the edge of their seats to figure out why did that detail was focused on.
Action Match:
This technique is used for smooth continuity between 2 or more shots by matching their movement or action. through this technique you can achieve seamless transition from one frame to next and makes viewer feel less disoriented.
Mostly used in fighting scenes, chase sequence or in any situation which involves dynamic movement.
Eyeline match cut:
this technique guides the viewer's gaze by showing what the character is looking at based on the direction of characters gaze. It is a very powerful tool to show connection or relationship between the character and the object. helps to build emotional connections as the viewer sees the world through the characters eyes.
Graphic match cut:
In this 2 of your shots are connected by their visual similarity or similarity in their shapes, colour or composition.its a technique to link different elements in story by creating a metaphorical connection between both.
These editing techniques are not just mechanical tools but devices for narrative which can transform your film to another level.when used thoughtfully and properly they can shape the pacing, build tension and enhance emotional intensity of a story.when you learn to blend these methods with creativity and your understanding of storytelling you can produce a masterpiece which can captivate and engage your audience.
editing is where all the magic happens where you transform an ordinary clip into a cinematic masterpiece.
