History & Evolution of films
The art of filmmaking has come a long way since its start. It has been evolving and progressing through simple experiments in motion to the advanced visual experience we enjoy today. History of film is a tale of revolution,technology advancement and innovation. In today's blog we will be exploring the intriguing journey of films, from its meagle beginning in19th century to its current position as one of the most powerful and all-encompassing forms of entertainment in the world.
The first motion pictures:
The roots of film goes back to the late 19th century, when innovators and pioneers from around the world began to experiment ways in which they could capture motion. Earliest forms of film are not really considered "movies" but some moving images or " motion pictures" captured on film strips.
Thomas Edison's laboratory produced a device called " kinetoscope" in 1891, through this device a single person could view a moving image by a peephole. during this same time period Lumiere brothers, Auguste & Louis Lumiere designed the"Cinematogtaphe" this was a projector which could project films to large sum of audience. The Lumiere brothers did there first screening in 1895 in which they showed moving pictures of " workers leaving the Lumiere factory" this was the very first screening of motion pictures to a vast audience.
Silent films:
For around 3 decades films were silent. even though they were silent it didn't stop them from making an impact on people.when watching a silent film people played live music,sound effects alongside the movie or narrated the movie to the audience.
George melies was a director who came out with a famous fantasy film "A trip to the moon" (1902). In this he initiated the special effects, refined set designs and perfectly setting the stage for visual storytelling. Alongside all of this actors used exaggerated gestures, facials expressions, physical movements to convey the story and emotions without the dialogues. During this era actors like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Mary Pickford became global icons.
Transition to sound (1920s):
The arrival of synchronized sound was the turning point of film history . In 1927 Warner brothers produced " The jazz singer" this was known as the first "talkie" meaning it was the first movie in which actors voice was synchronized with the actions on the screen. Sound revolution forever changed how stories could be told and experienced.
The rise of colour (1930s-1950s):
After sound the next major evolution in filmmaking was introduction of colour. The experiments on color films started to take place around 20th century but it was until 1930s that it became a feasible choice for widespread use.
"The wizard of Oz" and "Gone with the wind"' were released in 1939 and this was marked as the beginning of a new era. They used tri-colour process to create vibrant lifelike images. After this use of colour had become a very crucial part of storytelling and became a standard for hollywood to produce color films.
By 1960s and 1970s film industry went through a huge transformation. new generation of filmmakers surfaced and started challenging the norms set by Studio system. A lot of directors like Stanley Kubrick, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg started to push boundaries and work on different unique themes. Films like "Pulp Fiction" (1994), "The Godfather" (1972), and "Star Wars" (1977) are cultural touchstones and became the rise of blockbuster films.
Around 1970s-1980s special effects came in the loop, these effects help filmmakers create more fantastical and otherworldly elements in their films.
George Lucas’s "Star Wars" and Ridley Scott’s "Alien" (1979) really made the best of these special effects and created memorable worlds and creatures which were never seen on screen before.
In 1990s movies like " Jurassic park" and "The matrix" showed the power of digital effects. This revolution transformed how filmmakers could tell stories, special effects that were limited by physical props were now totally limitless by the help of computer generated imagery.
Around 2000s - 2010 digital filmmaking flourished even more by the help digital camera and editing software. now that these were becoming more affordable and accessible directors like Christopher Nolan and James Cameron produced "Avatar"(2009). By using CGI they pushed all sorts of limits of visual effects and 3D technology and created this masterpiece.
Through streaming services like "Amazon prime", "Hulu", "Netflix" now filmmakers didn't need to rely on traditional cinemas instead now they have open doors for independent films and audience from around the world.
Starting from the flickering images of Lumiere brothers to todays cutting-edge CGI, the history of film has been remarkably astonishing.Cinema has continuously progressed and adapted exceptionally to the changing times by using technology advancements perfectly and the creative breakthroughs have changed the ways to tell stories. As we continue to evolve film industry, we see endless new technologies shaping the form of art and creating something even more outstanding. only thing that wont be changing is that films will remain as one of the most powerful tools of storytelling for generations to come.
