sound is capable of  provoking emotions,creating atmosphere,shaping narratives and that's exactly why sound is considered one of the most powerful elements of storytelling. sound enhances storytelling  process,provides a sensory layer that is just as important as visual doesn't matter if its video games, television  or podcasts sound plays a very crucial role in all of them. TYPES OF SOUNDS IN MEDIA

Diegetic sound: diegetic sounds are those sounds which only exist in the world of films and are heard only by audience and characters. here the things which are included in this:

Dialogue:  this includes voice overs,conversations between two characters, or monologues.

Ambient sounds: All the background sounds like birds chirping,wind,traffic sounds. this basically helps establish the setting and create a sense of everything being real.

Sound effects: Those sounds that are direct part of the on screen scene like doors creaking or footsteps.

Music: sometimes music can be diegetic if the characters is actually playing music in the scene for instance the character playing piano or guitar. 


Non-Diegetic Sounds: diegetic sounds are added to elevate the storytelling and the atmosphere for the audience. this sound is not actually a part of the world your characters experience.  here are things included in non-diegetic sounds:

Film Score: the music played in the background to set a emotional tone of the scene. for example playing light melody to create a sense of happiness or suspenseful music to create a sense of tension.

Narration/voice overs: Basically the sounds only audience can hear not the characters for instance the narrator directly speaking to the audience or providing contextual information.

Sound Effects: Sound effects help add more to  you on screen action like dramatic sound or a cue to highlight a character.

Creating Atmosphere & Setting:  Basic function of sound is to create a realm of imagination by the help of Ambient sounds,background sounds.its helps audinence become a part of the environment, making it feel real. for instance: chirping sounds,traffic,sounds of wave crashing.

Enhancing emotions and tension: Sound is a very important tool to evoke emotions.a skillfully composed score can make your emotional scene so much more impactful and make your audience immerge even more in the scene.

Signalling key moments or transitions:  sound is used as a cue for transitions in films. like a sharp sound like an alarm ringing or a phone ringing can signal a change. sounds like fade-out or swish can signal an end of a scene while keeping audience engaged.

Immersion: one of the important parts of using sound is to make the audience feel like they are a part of that world and make them physically connected to the scene.  for example disoriented ringing in ears after a explosion. 

Subtle Communication: sound helps communicate with the audience without using dialogues. a sound of approaching train in the background indicates danger incoming.basically using sound like this helps shape audience expectations and emotional response.

Creating Identity or Memory: Sounds can become a part or identity of film and whenever that soundtrack is heard it reminds audience of that certain movie.
