UNRAVELING THE CODE: Semiotics and Saussure’s Signifier-Signified Relationship

FERDINAND SAUSSURE'S SIGNIFIER AND SIGNIFIED THEORY

Semiotics? it is a study of signs and symbols and how they are used to communicate meaning. Semiotic theory is basically the relationship between a signifier and the signified. The swiss linguist Ferdinand saussure introduced this concept and this concept is the base of how we understand and construct meaning in language or other systems of communication. Today in my blog we will explore semiotics in detail and decode the theory of Saussure.

WHAT IS SEMIOTICS:
It is a field of study on signs and symbols and how they produce meanings. It encompasses everything that can stand for anything other then languages like, images, sounds, gestures, objects or even ideas. for example a red traffic light is a sign that communicates to us for stopping or the logo of adidas represents lifestyle and values by which people live. i hope this somewhat cleared your idea about "signs". As per Saussure the key to understand any sign is to know and recognize the relationship between the signifier and the signified.

SIGNIFIER AND SIGNIFIED

SIGNIFIER: it is a physical sign. like the image, word, sound gesture that conveys the meaning. for example a flower is a signifier because it represents the concept of a flower.

SIGNIFIED: a idea or concept of what the signifier refers to. like for the word flower its signified is a mental image or idea of a flower that comes in our mind when we think of a flower

The basic unit in Saussure's theory is when signifier and signified form a sign. the relationship between signifier and signified is subjective or arbitrary because there is no fundamental connection between the sound of a flower and flower itself. the relationship between the both is set by social convention and the linguistic agreement. languages around the world have  different signifier for the same concept, for example: Signifier for flower in french is (fleur), in german its (blume) in korean its (kkot) and in turkish its(cicek). meaning that a meaning of something is not determined by constitutional connection between the signifier and signified but by the rules and codes of culture or system in which the sign exists

ROLE OF CONTEXT IN SEMIOTICS

Saussure also says that meaning is not dependent on context and that words and signs do not have fixed meanings their meanings comes from their relationship with other words and signs in their system or how they perceive a certain word and its sign. like  for the word "BANK" there are  multiple ways it can be perceived for instance a financial institution or a side of a river or a place or a store(like blood bank). basically it is the way how a word is used which determines which meaning is intended. He also stated that meaning is shaped by differences and opposition within a system of language.

APPLICATIONS OF SEMIOTICS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

ADVERTISING:   in advertisement we use signs to communicate our message about a product and lifestyle. usage of colours, logos, images is all a part of semiotics system and conveys ideas and values to consumers.

MEDIA AND FILM:  the use of signs and symbols in films,tv shows is to construct a narrative. like the lighting, sound, camera angles and colors can impact how we perceive a character or scene.

FASHION:  clothing is nonverbal form of communication because the type of  clothes you wear indicate your social status, lifestyle, personality and cultural identity.

SOCIAL MEDIA: emojis, hashtags are contemporary signs that communicate meanings in the digital word.these will constantly evolve  and serve as social language.

Saussure's theory gives us valuable insight on how  we can understand and produce meanings in communication.if we understand his concept of  how meanings are not inherent but are socially constructed through system of signs then it will be easier for us to gain deeper understanding of how language works and how it can shape perception of the world. Relationship between signifier and signified doesn't only help us decode meaning but allow us to interpret cultural and social systems that surround us. Whether its fasshion, language, media semiotics works as a tool to uncover hidden layers of meaning and understand how communication works on a much deeper level. semiotics also unlocks a framework that helps us see complex web of signs that is shaping our society and our reality.
